Went out for my first M group social event a couple of weeks ago. M group is just like a small class of 15 students who have their small group teaching sessions, student led discussions, anatomy sessions together.
i've always wanted to try the british curry, so was really really excited when our M group rep announced that we're heading for a curry house near the university. i've asked my ang mor friends what curry dish would they recommend. There's this Paneer thing i would love to try, curry with CHEESE CUBE, hmm, hmmmmm all the girls in my M group
we had papadum first - indian crackers with mango chutney. the mint raita dipping sauce was absoultely tasty! it's mint sauce mixed with yoghurt.
onion bhaji- typical starter to a british indian meal. deep fried onion seasoned with chili powder, coriander. my classmates went " oh my god ing, ur not taking pictures of the starters!!"the naan bread was humongous. really regret not ordering one ( i very kiamsiap lar, intended to save money but in the end we split the cost evenly....) tried some from Ross, could instantly taste the difference between freshly served naan and the ones u get from Tesco.
i tried cooking tikka masala and rogan josh myself. so opt for a Balti curry with lamb tikka and spinach that night. not spicy at all ( what da ya expect, ang mor cannot stand spicy food, and i am an anak timur whose tastebud is spoiled by nasi kandar) nevertheless it was quite a nice meal, loved the mushy spinach. *flex biceps and sings i'm popeye the sailor man poot poot*
Birmingham is famous for its Balti dishes introduced by the Kashmiri population ( from Pakistan?) Balti refers to the round bottomed wok that the curry is served in. There's even a Balti Triangle somewhere in the city, and yesh, i am going to hunt that area down to satisfy my tastebud.
there's even a Malaya curry on the menu but just cant be bothered to try least i get a major letdown.
we head for a pub after the meal and everyone bought a drink and laucnh straight into a drinking game. at the point where i eventually lost, my classmates exclaimed in utter surprise :" ing you dont have a drink?" then everyone started pouring portions of their drinks into an empty glass concocting a cocktail. haha that nearly scared the shit out of me, but luckily i didnt have to down that. left early because i really dont know my alchohol tolerance level.
